What To Do
If you’re driving along the road and begin to notice that the car behind you appears to be following you, you may start to feel fear, confusion, and discomfort. These feelings are all normal. However, it’s important not to act on your feelings, and instead, continue on your path ahead.
If you think someone is stalking you, you should take the following steps:
- Don’t panic. It may be difficult, but you should do your best to remain calm. It’s common to remain intently focused on your rear-view mirror when you think someone is stalking you, but it’s important to remain focused on the road ahead. You don’t want to become too distracted with the driver behind you that you miss something in front of you that could cause an accident.
- Keep driving normally. It’s not a good idea to make rash choices out of fear. Don’t try to outrun the driver as this could cause an accident. You may change lanes to see if the vehicle stays with you, but do so safely and not erratically. Pay attention to all sides of your vehicle, especially if you’re driving on the street rather than on the highway. You don’t want to be distracted with what’s happening behind you because it leaves you vulnerable in the front.
- Drive to the police station. If you’re pretty certain the vehicle behind you is following you, the safest place to go is to the police station. A stalker won’t likely follow you into the police station parking lot, but if they do, you should drive to the forecourt, remain in your vehicle, and lay on the horn until you get people’s attention. If someone approaches your vehicle, crack your window just a little bit to inform them of what’s happening. Don’t get out of the car.
